BS Chemistry is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate degree for students who finish FSc or A-levels with chemistry. You study organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry along with biochemistry, spend a large part of your time in laboratories, and finish with a research project or internship. Graduates work in quality control, testing laboratories, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, teaching and research, or continue to MS/MPhil and PhD. Most universities ask for at least 45% to 50% in intermediate, but admission to popular public universities is decided by merit that is much higher than the minimum.

Areas such as environmental, industrial, polymer, nuclear and computational chemistry usually appear as courses or specializations later in the degree.
The basic requirement is FSc or A-levels with chemistry. The minimum percentage is usually between 45% and 50%. For example, Jinnah University for Women lists 45% in a science HSC, while Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (Shaheed Benazirabad) asked for 50% in pre-medical or pre-engineering for its BS programs. The University of Lahore's 2025 notice asked for FSc medical with at least 50%. Rules differ, so always check the notice of the university you are applying to.
The subject group matters at some universities. Some accept both pre-medical and pre-engineering; others name only pre-medical. Chemistry is the one subject every program expects.
Most public universities rank applicants on a weighted score of matric and intermediate marks. One public university's published formula, for example, is 30% matric and 70% intermediate. Others add an entry test or an interview, and some use a university test or an NTS test. Whether you need a test depends on the university, so confirm it in the admission notice. You can see how recent merit lists looked on our BS Chemistry merit list page, and general guidance on forms, tests and deadlines is on the BS admissions page.
If you already hold a two-year BA/BSc or associate degree (14 years of education), some universities admit you directly into the 5th semester of the BS program, usually with at least 50% in the earlier degree. UMT, for example, counts a BSc as 50 credit hours, adds a bridging semester and requires 130 credit hours in total with a CGPA of 2.00. Rules differ by university, so check before you plan around this route.
Some universities that follow the HEC template add General Chemistry courses for students without a chemistry background, and these must be passed to continue. If this applies to you, ask the department before applying.
BS Chemistry takes four years, which is eight regular semesters, two in each year. Universities usually allow extra time if a student falls behind, but the maximum limit varies.
The degree sits within the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy (V 1.1), which universities were required to implement from Fall 2023. The policy's framework allows 120 to 144 credit hours for a four-year BS with a single major. In practice programs vary: one university's chemistry scheme requires 137 credit hours, and UMT's lateral-entry route requires 130 in total. A degree normally includes general education courses (English, Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies, mathematics or statistics, computing), chemistry core courses with labs, electives or a specialization, and a final-year project or internship.
In March 2025 HEC issued revised chemistry curricula for associate, bachelor's and master's programs. The revised BS curriculum introduces fourteen specializations and makes a supervised internship and a capstone project compulsory, each worth three credit hours. Universities adopt revised curricula on their own timelines, so a student starting this year may follow the new scheme or an earlier 2023 version. Ask the department which one applies.
Course titles differ between universities, but the pattern is similar. This outline follows the HEC-based scheme summarised on our BS Chemistry syllabus page.
|
Stage |
What you usually study |
|---|---|
|
Year 1 |
English, mathematics, computer applications, general courses, and first courses in inorganic and organic chemistry with labs |
|
Year 2 |
Physical chemistry; environmental, analytical and industrial chemistry and biochemistry at foundation level; statistics and Pakistan Studies |
|
Year 3 |
Advanced inorganic, organic, physical and biochemistry courses, each with lab work |
|
Year 4 |
Specialization papers, an elective, practical courses, and a research project, internship or position paper |
This is a general pattern. Check your university's scheme of studies for the exact semester-wise list.
HEC's revised curriculum names fourteen specializations: Agricultural Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, Fuel Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer and Materials Chemistry, and Soil Chemistry. No university offers all of them. Government Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur, for example, advertised BS Chemistry with analytical, physical, organic, forensic, computational, pharmaceutical, and polymer and material specializations.
Electives you may see include nano chemistry, fuel chemistry, radiation chemistry and photochemistry, natural product chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry and renewable energy chemistry.
In the final year, expect a research project or capstone that applies lab methods to a real question and, under the revised curriculum, a supervised internship. Employers and MS supervisors often ask about these first, so choose them carefully.

Evening and distance options. Some universities run evening sections; Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, for example, listed BS Chemistry (Evening) in its admission notice. Allama Iqbal Open University lists BS Chemistry at its regional centres for distance learners. Chemistry has a large lab component, so ask how practicals are handled before choosing a distance option.
How to compare universities. Look at laboratory facilities and instruments, the number of full-time PhD faculty, whether the program follows the 2025 HEC curriculum, the specializations offered, fee level, and what recent graduates did next.
Fees. Public university fees are far lower than private ones, but there is no single figure for BS Chemistry. Check the fee notice in each university's admission advertisement.
Check eligibility and the admission advertisement of your shortlisted universities.
Apply online or by form before the last date, with the documents the university lists.
Take the university test, NTS test or interview if the university requires one.
Wait for the merit lists. Universities often issue a first, second and later lists as seats fill.
Submit original documents and fees to confirm the seat.
How competitive is it? Our merit list page shows how widely closing merit differs. In its 2026 data, Government College University Faisalabad's first merit list for BS Chemistry ran from 96.67 at the top to 81.27 at the bottom, while the University of Swabi's ran from 94.88 to 52.45. Check the latest BS Chemistry merit lists for current numbers, and keep fallback options, including evening programs and good private universities.
Chemistry is a base science for industries Pakistan already has, so graduates have more than one path. The scope is real, but it is strongest for students who build practical lab skills and are willing to continue to MS.
Pharmaceutical and healthcare: quality control, quality assurance, formulation and production, and clinical and diagnostic labs. Career guides commonly describe this as the largest employer of chemistry graduates.
Chemical and manufacturing industries: university departments report student involvement in cement, fertiliser, textile, chemical and energy industries.
Food, beverage and environmental testing: laboratory analysis, compliance testing and quality assurance.
Research organisations: PCSIR and PINSTECH are named by university chemistry departments as destinations for postgraduates.
Forensic and government laboratories: open to graduates with forensic or analytical training.
Teaching: school teaching with a BS and teaching qualification; college and university teaching usually requires postgraduate qualifications.
A four-year BS counts as 16 years of education, the usual requirement for MS/MPhil admission. After MS/MPhil you can continue to a PhD in organic, inorganic, physical, analytical or biochemistry areas, and pursue research and university teaching. If you want to study abroad, start building your grades and research record early.
There is no official salary survey for BS Chemistry graduates in Pakistan, and published estimates differ widely. One university page puts the average annual salary of a BS Chemistry graduate at PKR 450,000 (about PKR 37,500 a month). A 2023 student blog gives PKR 40,000 to 120,000 a month. A recent career guide estimates PKR 40,000 to 100,000 a month for entry-level roles in pharmaceutical quality control, manufacturing and teaching, with higher figures after MS or PhD. Treat these as rough ranges: pay depends on the employer, city, your lab skills and your degree level.

BS Chemistry is a science degree. If your goal is to design and run chemical plants as an engineer, chemical engineering is the more direct route. If you are drawn to labs, analysis and research, BS Chemistry is the better fit. Forensic science is another path that uses chemistry heavily.
It suits students who enjoy practical work, careful measurement and problem solving, and who are comfortable with mathematics. Expect many lab hours, lab reports and a lot of reactions to learn early on. Many entry-level jobs are in testing and quality control rather than research, and research or university teaching careers usually need MS or PhD. If that matches what you want, the degree gives a solid base. If you are unsure, compare it with the related degrees above before choosing.
