LLB Eligibility Criteria in Pakistan 2026

LLB eligibility criteria in Pakistan 2026: HEC’s 45% minimum, LAT 50/100, age limit rules and Punjab University’s 55% requirement explained.

To apply for LLB in Pakistan, you need an intermediate (FA, FSc, ICS, I.Com) or A-Level qualification with at least 45% marks under HEC’s curriculum, and a score of at least 50 out of 100 in the HEC Law Admission Test (LAT). Universities can set higher bars. The University of the Punjab (PU), Lahore, asks for 55% in intermediate and also runs its own admission test. LLB is now a four-year degree.

LAT deadline: the next LAT is scheduled for 15 November 2026, and registration closes on 20 October 2026. See the LAT registration process.

Who Can Apply for LLB in Pakistan

Educational qualification

You need HSSC or an equivalent 12-year qualification. HEC’s requirement refers to HSSC or equivalent rather than a specific group, so students from pre-medical, pre-engineering, ICS, commerce and arts backgrounds can all apply. A-Level students need an IBCC equivalence certificate, and PU asks for IBCC equivalence or verification at the time of admission.

Minimum marks required

HEC’s curriculum sets the national minimum at 45% in HSSC/A-Levels. Individual universities can set a higher bar. PU, for example, asks for 55%. Meeting the minimum only makes you eligible. Seats are filled by merit, so check the previous merit lists on the LLB merit lists page before choosing where to apply.

If you are waiting for your intermediate result

You can sit the LAT while awaiting your final HSSC result. For PU, candidates who have appeared in the final (Part-II) exam can be admitted provisionally on their Part-I result if they hold the required 55%.

Gap years after intermediate

HEC’s curriculum committee decided that denying LLB admission because of a gap after 12 years of schooling is unjustified for students who have cleared the LAT. If a university refuses you on that ground alone, you can raise the HEC notification with its admissions office.

Law Admission Test (LAT) Requirement for LLB

LAT passing marks and pattern

The LAT carries 100 marks, and 50 is the pass mark. It includes multiple-choice questions in English, general knowledge, Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies, Urdu and basic mathematics, along with an essay and a personal statement. Passing the LAT does not guarantee a seat. It makes you eligible to apply. For eligibility details read the HEC LAT eligibility criteria. For format, see the LAT paper pattern and LAT test preparation.

LAT 2026 dates

Sitting Registration deadline Test date Result
LAT 3 25 May 2026 21 June 2026 3 August 2026

LAT 5 20 October 2026 15 November 2026 24 December 2026 (scheduled)

These dates reflect HEC’s announced calendar as of 16 October 2026. Confirm them on the LAT date sheet and the ETC portal (etc.hec.gov.pk) before registering.

LLB Age Limit 2026

There is no single answer, because HEC and individual universities have published different positions.

  • HEC’s 2025 LLB curriculum records a decision that no upper age limit be applied to the LLB programme.
  • PU’s 2026 admission notice for LLB lists an age limit of 24 years.
  • A PU notification reported from the 2022–23 session removed the age cap for the five-year Group B programme at University Law College and the Gujranwala and Jhelum campuses, and for morning programmes in affiliated colleges.

Because rules differ by programme and campus, read the age clause in your university’s current admission notice before you apply.

Punjab University LLB Admission Criteria

This section covers the University of the Punjab in Lahore, not Panjab University in Chandigarh, India. For the 4-year LLB, PU’s 2026 notice lists these conditions:

  • Intermediate (FA, FSc or A-Level) or equivalent with at least 55%, or provisional admission on the Part-I result if you are waiting for your Part-II result.
  • A pass in the HEC LAT with 50%, valid under HEC policy on the date of admission.
  • An attempt at the PU admission test, which carries 25% weightage in merit.
  • An age of not more than 24 years, as stated in the notice.
  • IBCC equivalence or verification of your academic documents at admission.

The remaining merit components can change each session, so check the current prospectus. For deadlines and notices, see PU Lahore admissions 2026.

LLB Eligibility at Other Universities

University of the Punjab, Lahore 55% 50/100 PU admission test (25% weightage); age limit of 24 in the 2026 notice

Fees, seats and deadlines vary, so compare options on the LLB universities in Pakistan list and the LLB fee structure page.

What Happened to the 3-Year LLB?

The old 3-year LLB for graduates was replaced when the five-year LLB was introduced under the Pakistan Bar Council Legal Education Rules, 2015. HEC then shortened the programme to four years for new admissions from Fall 2025, and its curriculum covers the 4-year LLB after intermediate. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree, ask the Directorate of Legal Education or your target university which pathway currently applies. For the degree’s structure, see LLB Hons in Pakistan.

Next Steps

  1. Check your intermediate marks against HEC’s 45% baseline and your target university’s requirement.
  2. Register for the next LAT on the ETC portal. The current deadline is 20 October 2026.
  3. Prepare using the LAT test preparation resources.
  4. Read your target university’s notice for its age clause and extra tests, then follow LLB admissions.
  5. Review jobs after LLB if you are still deciding on a career.
