LLB Subjects List in Pakistan 2026: 4 Year, 5 Year and 3 Year Programs

LLB subjects list for Pakistan: PU 4 year semester list, 5 year Part 2 papers with marks, legacy 3 year Part 2, plus books and past papers.

The LLB subjects you study depend on the program you joined. Students admitted from Fall 2025 follow the four-year, eight-semester LLB. Students admitted earlier are on the five-year LLB, which Punjab University (PU) ran in five annual parts. A smaller group is still finishing the old three-year LLB. “Part 2” therefore means a different set of papers in each program, so find your row below and read only that section.

Which LLB program are you in?

Your program What “Part 2” or “2nd year” means Go to
4-year LLB (admitted Fall 2025 onward) Semesters III and IV 4-year LLB section
PU 5-year LLB, annual system Second annual exam: six papers, 600 marks PU 5-year section
5-year LLB on the semester system (most universities; PU in later sessions) Semesters 3 and 4 Semester-based section
3-year LLB (legacy) Second-year exam: seven papers 3-year section

Universities can reorder or rename courses within HEC’s framework. Treat any list, including this one, as a guide, and confirm it against your department’s current scheme of studies. You can also check the LLB syllabus page for your university’s outline.

LLB subjects list for the 4-year LLB

HEC notified the revised four-year LLB curriculum on 10 July 2025, effective Fall 2025. The Pakistan Bar Council proposed the change, which replaced the five-year structure that followed the Supreme Court’s 2019 judgment (2019 SCMR 389). Admission needs at least 45% in your qualifying exam and at least 50% in the Law Admission Test (LAT). See the LLB eligibility criteria , the LAT page and the LLB admissions guide .

PU’s version of the program has 147 credit hours over eight semesters. Other universities that follow HEC’s scheme are close to this. For example, the scheme published by GAUS totals 146 credit hours.

LLB Part 2 in the 4-year LLB: Semesters III and IV

At PU, second-year law subjects are Law of Contract and Jurisprudence in Semester III, and Principles of Constitutional Law, Equity/Trusts/Specific Relief, Law of Property, Environmental Law and Islamic Jurisprudence in Semester IV. Other universities arrange the same ideas differently:

PU (curriculum notified 25 Sep 2026) GAUS scheme Subject Detail
Semester III law subjects Law of Contract, Jurisprudence Criminal Law, Law of Contract, Islamic Jurisprudence, Principles of Constitutional Law
Semester IV law subjects Principles of Constitutional Law, Equity/Trusts/Specific Relief, Law of Property, Environmental Law, Islamic Jurisprudence Constitutional Law of Pakistan (Ideology and Constitution), Equity/Trusts/Specific Relief, Law of Property, ADR, Jurisprudence
Other courses World History, Public Policy, Ideology and Constitution of Pakistan, Civics, Fehm-e-Quran/Islamic Studies Psychology, Islamic Studies/Fehm-e-Quran, Civics and Community Engagement

The subjects are broadly the same, but the semester differs. If you are comparing notes with a friend at another university, ask which semester a paper falls in before you assume you are behind.

LLB 1st year subjects in the 4-year LLB (Semesters I and II)

At PU, only three of the twelve first-year courses are core law papers: Introduction to Law and Legal Systems, Law of Torts and Criminal Law. The rest are general-education and interdisciplinary courses such as Quantitative Reasoning, Functional English, ICT, Pakistan Studies, Political Science, Sociology and Expository Writing. The full list is in the eight-semester table above.

Electives

PU lists six electives, each in a fixed semester: Media Law (V), International Human Rights Law (VI), Medical and Forensic Law (VII), AI and Law (VII), Taxation Law (VIII) and International Trade Law (VIII). Other universities may offer different electives, so check with your department. To see where these subjects can lead, read the LLB career guide .

LLB 3-year subjects in Pakistan: Part 2 (legacy)

These lists matter if you are a legacy student, a supplementary candidate, or you need the syllabus to understand an older degree. Part 2 was the heavy year, with seven papers. The table follows PU’s pattern.

Paper Subject What it covers Past papers
I Constitutional Law-II Constitutional history of Pakistan, the 1973 Constitution, landmark cases Constitutional Law
II Equity Equity maxims, Specific Relief Act 1877, Trust Act 1882 Equity
III Company Law (new course) / Mercantile Law (old course) Company law, Partnership Act 1932, Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 Company Law
IV Law of Transfer of Property Transfer of Property Act 1882, Registration Act 1908, Succession Act 1925, Land Acquisition Act 1894 Transfer of Property

VII Special and Local Laws Land Revenue Act 1967, Pre-emption Act 1991, Punjab Tenancy Act 1887 Special and Local Laws

Company law in older papers may refer to the Companies Ordinance 1984. The current statute is the Companies Act, 2017, which PU’s outline calls the Companies Ordinance, 2017. See all papers on the PU LLB Part 2 past papers page.

Other universities

The 3-year Part 2 was not identical everywhere. Some universities listed Administrative Law and Constitutional History of Pakistan in year two instead of Equity and Special and Local Laws. Karachi’s Part-II pattern, as previously listed on this page, is below. Verify it against the latest University of Karachi notification.

Paper Subject
I Constitution of Pakistan 1973
II Administrative Law (principles, tribunals, civil service laws)
III Mercantile Law (companies, negotiable instruments, partnership)
IV Law of Transfer of Property (including Registration, Succession, Land Acquisition)
V Islamic Personal Law (including pre-emption, Guardian and Wards Act)
VI International Law (public and private)
VII Constitutional History of Pakistan

Is the 3-year LLB still offered?

Not for new admissions. The Supreme Court’s judgment reported as 2019 SCMR 389 required a five-year LLB, and HEC’s 2025 notification moved new admissions to four years. If an institution still advertises a 3-year LLB, confirm its recognition with the university and the Pakistan Bar Council before you rely on it. For background, see LLB 3 years .

How to prepare for LLB Part 2

If you are in PU’s 5-year Part 2 (new course):

  • Read the marks split first. Constitutional Law-I is two papers in one: the outline lists 12 British topics and 11 US topics, and each constitution carries 50 marks. Prepare both halves equally.
  • Treat English-II as a skills paper. Practise précis, application and memo writing, and revise the five set stories.
  • Human Rights Law ends with remedies under Articles 199 and 184(3). Leave time for that section.
  • ADR covers Pakistan’s own framework as well as international arbitration. Don’t revise only the domestic half.
  • Practise with LLB Part 2 past papers .

If you are a legacy 3-year student , these mark splits come from PU’s outline for the same statutes (placed in Parts III and IV of the 5-year program). The 3-year program page does not list marks, so confirm with your outline:

Paper Split
Constitutional Law-II Constitutional history 20, 1973 Constitution 60, cases 20
Transfer of Property Transfer of Property Act 40, Registration Act 20, Succession Act 20, Land Acquisition Act 20
Mercantile Law Company law 60, Partnership Act 20, Negotiable Instruments Act 20
Equity Equity maxims and principles 40, Specific Relief Act 40, Trust Act 20
Special and Local Laws Land Revenue Act 60, Pre-emption Act 20, Punjab Tenancy Act 20
