B.Ed subjects in Pakistan fall into five groups: general education courses (4-year program only), 12 compulsory professional education courses, pedagogy courses (the “Teaching of…” series), a specialization or elective track, and practice teaching with a capstone project. Which of these you study depends on the program you enter. The 4-year program has 132 credit hours, the 2.5-year program has 84, and the 1.5-year program has 54.
These figures come from the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) 2025 curriculum for education degrees. HEC sets minimum standards, so your university decides the course codes, sequence and electives. Check its scheme of studies before you apply. For entry requirements, see the B.Ed eligibility criteria, and for deadlines, see B.Ed admissions.
Your previous qualification decides your program, and each program has its own subject list.
| Program | Who can join | Duration | Minimum credit hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Ed 4-Year | 12 years of schooling (FSc, FA, I.Com or equivalent) in any discipline | 8 semesters | 132 (universities may go up to 148) |
| B.Ed 2.5-Year | 14-year degree (BA/BSc) in a field other than education | 5 semesters | 84 |
| B.Ed 1.5-Year | 16-year degree (BS/MA/MSc) in a field other than education | 3 semesters | 54 |
HEC now uses “B.Ed” as the only title for these degrees. Specializations appear on your transcript, not in the degree name. Older university pages may still use “BS Education”; you can compare them with these BS Education subjects.
The 4-year program has two additional entry routes:
Universities can set higher requirements, so confirm with the department.

HEC requires these 12 courses in every B.Ed specialization. They are the core of the degree.

Some universities teach related courses such as General Methods of Teaching, Educational Technology or Guidance and Counselling. They may sit inside this group or under foundation or interdisciplinary courses.
HEC lists six pedagogy courses:
In the 4-year and 2.5-year programs, all six are compulsory. In the 1.5-year program, you take one: Teaching of Science, Social Science or Languages. Choose the one that matches your earlier degree.
The 4-year program adds 34 credit hours of general education: Quantitative Reasoning I and II, Natural Science, Functional English, Expository Writing, ICT, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Islamic Studies (Ethics for non-Muslim students), Ideology and Constitution of Pakistan, Pakistan Studies, Civics and Community Engagement, Entrepreneurship, and Fehm-e-Quran I and II for Muslim students.
For Natural Science, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities, universities choose the specific course from HEC’s suggested lists. Examples include General Science or Environmental Science, Psychology or Sociology, and Urdu, History or Geography.
| Semester | What you study | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| I | Quantitative Reasoning I, Natural Science, Functional English, ICT, two professional courses | 18 |

You can leave after semester IV with an Associate Degree in Education.

The two interdisciplinary courses come from a pool that includes Economics of Education, Comparative Education, Guidance and Counselling in School, Human Growth and Development, Exceptional Children, Media Education and Sociology of Education. In the 4-year program, you pick four from the same pool.
Practical work is a required part of the degree.
HEC says the internship and capstone can’t be replaced by extra coursework.
You choose one specialization track and take six courses from it. HEC lists 29 tracks, grouped here by focus:
HEC suggests seven or eight courses for each track and students pick six. Here is what three tracks contain:
| Track | Example courses HEC suggests |
|---|---|
| Educational Leadership and Management | School Organization and Management, Foundations of Educational Leadership, Educational Laws and Policies, Human Resource Management in Education, Financial Management for School Leaders |
| Inclusive Education | Inclusive Education: Theory and Practice, Assessment in Inclusive Education, Inclusive Classroom Pedagogies, Instructional Adaptation for Inclusion |
| Artificial Intelligence in Education | Introduction to AI in Education, AI in Schools, AI for Teachers and Education Leaders, AI in Education: Ethics and Impacts |
Universities offer only the tracks their faculty can teach. Ask which ones run in your intake before you apply.
HEC’s standards are minimums. Departments can rearrange the sequence, rename courses, add electives and set higher standards. Real schemes vary:
